“Article 44 of the Constitution lists Uniform Civil Code as one of the Directive Principles of State Policy. BJP reiterates its stand to draw a Uniform Civil Code, drawing upon the best traditions and harmonising them with the modern times.”
A nationwide Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has not been enacted. At the state level, Uttarakhand became the first state to implement a UCC, with its rules coming into force in January 2025, and some other states have announced intentions to consider similar legislation. The 22nd Law Commission sought public views on a UCC. The central pledge to draw up a Uniform Civil Code remains at the consultation/advocacy stage rather than enacted nationally.
