The area under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) "disturbed areas" notification has been progressively reduced over successive years in Nagaland, Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, alongside multiple peace accords with insurgent groups and some inter-state boundary agreements (e.g. parts of the Assam-Meghalaya and Assam-Arunachal disputes). However, AFSPA has not been fully removed and remains in force in several areas; Manipur experienced significant ethnic violence from 2023, and some inter-state boundary disputes are unresolved. The phased-removal pledge is in progress but not complete. Partial (assessment reflects status, not the policy’s contested merits).
