The Union Cabinet approved a five-year extension of PMGKAY on 28 November 2023, effective 1 January 2024 and running through December 2028, providing 5 kg of free foodgrains per beneficiary per month to roughly 81 crore people at an estimated outlay of about Rs 11.8 lakh crore. The free-ration entitlement is subsumed within the National Food Security Act framework. The pledge is being delivered; note the extension was legislated before the April 2024 manifesto, which reaffirmed it.
