The National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE, launched FY2023-24, Rs 349.70 crore, jointly run by MoSJE and MoHUA via NSKFDC) aims to end hazardous manual cleaning of sewers/septic tanks and provide safety equipment, health cover and alternative livelihoods. As of 31 December 2025, about 89,114 sewer and septic tank workers were validated/profiled, with large numbers issued PPE kits and Ayushman Bharat health cards, capital subsidies released for mechanised equipment, and convergence with SBM-Urban 2.0 for desludging vehicles. The pledge to continue and expand these initiatives is being actively delivered; full coverage of all ULBs by 2025-26 and complete elimination of hazardous manual cleaning remain in progress.
