Eliminate open landfills through the Waste to Wealth approach

The promise was to continue eliminating open landfills through the Waste to Wealth Mission. Official evidence shows active remediation under SBM-U 2.0 and the Dumpsite Remediation Accelerator Programme, with over 62 percent of legacy waste processed and 1,428 dumpsites under remediation as reported in January 2026. The same official note says 459 dumpsites achieved complete remediation in 2025 and 1,138 dumpsites had been fully remediated cumulatively, but India still had around 2,479 identified dumpsites and a remaining zero-dumpsite target. This is on_track because the programme has measurable progress, a defined October 2026 target and active implementation, but the outcome is not yet fulfilled. Budget: direct official allocation exists through SBM-U 2.0, with Cabinet-approved total outlay of Rs 1,41,600 crore and central share of Rs 36,465 crore for 2021-22 to 2025-26; utilisation-specific dumpsite remediation expenditure was not found in this batch.
