“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India shall become a $5 trillion economy. Through structural reforms, increased FDI, expansion of manufacturing under Make in India, and accelerated digital transformation, India will cement its position as the world's third-largest economy.”
The promise was to make India a US dollar 5 trillion economy and move toward becoming the world's third-largest economy. The target has not yet been achieved: MoSPI's provisional estimates put nominal GDP at Rs 346.36 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, which is still below US dollar 5 trillion at prevailing exchange rates. However, official data shows continued high nominal and real GDP growth, with FY 2025-26 nominal GDP growth estimated at 8.9 percent and real GDP growth at 7.7 percent. PIB's growth note states that India is projected to reach US dollar 5 trillion by 2027 and move toward becoming the third-largest economy. Since the quantified target is not yet delivered but official indicators show a credible trajectory within the term, the verdict is on track rather than fulfilled or pending. Budget: not applicable as a direct expenditure promise; no separate budget allocation is required for this macroeconomic outcome.
