Our Assessment

The promise was to support translation and adaptation of ancient Bharatiya literary works into foreign languages. Official and autonomous-government evidence shows relevant activity through Sahitya Akademi publications and translation infrastructure, including English anthologies of ancient Indian literature and publication of the Valmiki Ramayana in Thai as Ramakien. Sahitya Akademi also has translation centres and Indian Literature, a long-running journal featuring translations from Indian languages into English. However, I did not find a new dedicated, scaled post-2024 programme focused specifically on translating and adapting ancient Indian literary works into multiple foreign languages. This is partial because relevant institutional work exists, but the dedicated manifesto mechanism and scale are only thinly evidenced. Budget: no direct allocation or utilisation line for this specific foreign-language ancient-literature translation promise was found.
